Balenciaga does Gladiator

BalenciagaWe’ve got more new shoes to banish those winter blues! This time we’re looking at Balenciaga’s gladiator-like sandal in deep green. There’s not a lot to be said about this. You’ll either love it or hate it. It might look a bit of an odd design, a cross between a sandal, a zip-up trainer and a killer stiletto, but we’re betting it’s only a matter of time until we see it adding extra inches to Kate (or Sienna)! And we always like to applaud designers who come up with innovative shoe ideas. Playing it safe is boring.

Festive Footwear

VspumpWe love a bit of novelty, and Victoria’s Secret (best known for their underwear) have a whole collection of shoes especially for Christmas. However it’s not quite the fluffy red & white range we expected (or should that be ‘wanted‘?), and rather a collection of excessively sparkly creations for parties. Because Christmas is in just over a week (argh!) they’re now all reduced. So pick up your bargain rhinestone pumps ($65 right) and knee-high sequinned boots ($129 in silver or pink) ready to go with that little black dress you know you’ll buy in the January sales.

Polished for Christmas

Polishes If you’re wearing open-toe shoes to Christmas parties this year, you have to paint your toenails for the full effect! This time of year red is the obvious choice, so do it right with one of OPI’s limited edition holiday polishes, like ‘All The Berry Best‘. If you’re wearing metallic shoes (and anyone who’s anyone is) try the Holiday Harmony range instead, a collection of golds and bronzes. ‘Sonata in Bronze’ is the perfect partner for these bronze sandals from Topshop (£50), and there’s also a lipgloss, if you really want to match!

Shoes for stylish vegans

VeganThere’s always been a bit of a stigma attached to cruelty-free, vegan shoes. Many of us want to be ethical, but why do most people seem to assume ethical means ’boring’? There are very few brands that make nice veggie shoes, but they can be found - look to strict vegan Alicia Silverstone for details. UK company Beyond Skin make cruelty-free footwear to order, and instead of just using plastic-like leather substitutes, they also use satin, cotton and glitter fabrics and follow current trends. Shown are ‘Hannah’ boots (£179). They don’t come cheap, but it’s better than buying budget shoes that aren’t made of leather but were probably made in a sweatshop.

Lace-up Boots

LacebootLace-up boots. They’re a little bit ‘Victoriana‘, a little bit 'horsey sloane', and a little bit ‘your gran‘. Whichever category you think they fall into, they’re the designer boot du jour and they’re a good alternative to Uggs or Mukluks (them again!) if you like your boots more streamlined and feminine. These heeled ones ('Vase', $159.99 from Nine West) are a good modern take on the look, and work well worn over skinny jeans with a gypsy top (no poncho though, there is such thing as overkill). Don’t make the mistake of wearing these on a hot date or (our version of a hot date) a shoe-shopping trip, though. It’ll all end in tears when you try to undo the laces.

Nine West shoes are available in the UK at House Of Fraser.

New Louboutin's!

SilverloubsOk, so it may only be December, but we’re having a ‘bah, bumbug’ moment and dreaming of next season. That’s right, it’s time for some new designer shoes! We’ve found yet more lovely impractical shoes at sky-high prices just for you. Buzz words for the season seem to be ‘wedge‘, ‘wedge’ and ‘wedge‘. So just to be awkward, here’s a pair of non-wedges from the Christian Louboutin Spring / Summer ’05 collection. So now you know what to do with the ribbon that's left over from your Chrismas wrapping.
