Calfboot"I have this great pair of black boots. Unfortunately, they're cheap fake leather, and they're starting to look like it. I'd like to replace them with something of a more reasonable quality. The boot that I am looking for has square toes (at least not pointy) a good solid heel, a reasonable heel height, and is mid-calf. Can you help me find my new favorite pair of heeled boots? - Mary
When this question first came in, I thought it would be an easy one, but with the plethora of knee high spike heels and flats around, it was harder than I thought. But I perservered and found what I think you're looking for....

First off is a classic, timeless black leather boot, the 'Zevida' from Bandolino ($112.95). It's leather, with a strong heel just over 3" high, and a squared off toe. The boots are available through Zappos.com

Almost identical, but slightly more rounded, and with assymetrical tops, Steve Madden's 'Jennie' boots (also pictured at the top of this post) are marginally more expensive at $119.99, but you do get free shipping on the from Shoes.com.

Next up comes a slightly slimmer heel and a more rounded toe in Kenneth Cole's 'Sweet as Candy' boot. Shown is the brown version but it is also available in black for $225.

If you fancy splashing out even more, Cole Haan's 'Julietta' short boots fit your specifications completely. A chunky, sturdy heel, a square toe and a high-quality leather upper mean these will last you ages. They're $350 from Saks.

And finally, the cheapest boot of the bunch, and also the tallest, is Naturaliser's 'Effie' boot , with a little buckle detail on the ankle. The heel is a wearable 2", and like all the other boots they're made from a decent black leather with a non-pointy toe.
