Jelly Shoes - The Debate Continues [A Yay or Nay]

UrbnjelliesUrban Outfitters apparently 'heart' jellies. As far as I'm concerned they need their heads testing. We've been over this before, many times. In fact jellies are a constant topic of debate on Shoewawa. I will admit I owned a pair once, as a child. They were clear with silver glitter, and they truly were horrible. Some of you have argued on past posts that they're not as cheap-looking, sweaty and generally vile as I remember them being, but then Rachel dared to mention jellies a couple of weeks ago, and she was soon told where to go.

So, since it's Wednesday, I want to clear this up once and for all. Jelly Shoes - Yay or Nay (and most importantly, why?!).

(don't forget to vote on the other Yay or Nays at Catwalk Queen, Bridalwave, Trashionista and The Bag Lady)

I have only found ONE reason to like jellies,

the Michael Kors Pistols in black, white, and lime

I want them, but I can't afford it! They aren't disgusting jellies with glitter. They look classy and sexy.

I don't know... I have rarely, if ever, seen jellies that don't look like an episode of "When the 80's Attack!" ;-) If you're a 'tween or young teen, you can probably pull them off (my 13 year old daughter has a pair of Dr Scholl's that are jelly on top, comfy sole on the bottom), but anyone who calls herself a 'woman' probably should eschew them.

Posted by: OzLady | May 10, 2006 4:04 PM

Nay. I owned a blue glittery pair as a child, and a peach colored pair as a teenager. The blue ones were great for jumping rope and doing hopscotch and stuff, I loved them...but the peach ones were just stiff and kind of hard to walk in and my feet were sweating profusely. So my last experience dictates how I feel about 'em...nay.

Posted by: Melanie | May 10, 2006 4:19 PM

NAY! Smelly feet over shoes that look like larger versions of shoes for, say, a Cabbage Patch Doll?!!? I think not!

Posted by: amie | May 10, 2006 4:29 PM

It's yay if you wear them only at the beach as a safety item. Here in Portugal we have this fish with a painful venom (spider-fish?!) and to avoid the damned fish I surely would wear them!! People get stinged everyday. Children too. So, here, jelly shoes are a yay!
But it's nay cause of sweaty feet...

Posted by: Uhecca | May 10, 2006 4:43 PM

Nay - unless you are on a pebbly beach like where I live or possibly in a spa area of a gym but no no no not out in the street (and not with socks under them) my mum wouldn't let me wear them as they were 'common' so of course as a young adult in the 80's I had several pairs but they are sweaty and rub terribly

Posted by: Deb | May 10, 2006 4:43 PM

I should have said that wearing them at the beach / in the sea to protect your feet is a different matter. Even I will put on vile footwear if it stops the weaver fish from stinging my feet!

This is a yay or nay as a fashion item, more than anything.

Posted by: Ms Shoewawa | May 10, 2006 4:53 PM

Oh, I loved them when I was a child, so I have to say Yay. I don't think they're right for adult women, though, except as shower/beach shoes.

Posted by: Elinor | May 10, 2006 4:58 PM

Nay Nay NAY!!! (please excuse the horse impression)
Designers can do what they like to the jelly shoe, add a heel, reshape it, add sparkles, ANYTHING, and it won't change the fact they are working with a fundamentally unflattering, foot perspiring, ankle rubbing material.
There is just no way to make these shoes work on anything other than a deeply ironic level.

Posted by: Sophie | May 10, 2006 5:07 PM

Nay obviously for fashion, but yay for going in the sea. Like everyone else, I used to wear these loads on holiday when I was younger, although I wouldn't wear them now unless I had to go into water where I can't see the ground and was aware that there were a lot of rocks around. Nay AND yay, depending on the situation.

Posted by: Caroline | May 10, 2006 5:11 PM

From a safety-on-the-beach point of view, I understand that they have their uses. But that doesn't stop them being vile. Why not wear clear flip flops? I've got a pair with clear soles and gold straps that'd do the exact same job as jelly shoes. Avoid, they are evil.

NAY!

Posted by: Toni | May 10, 2006 5:12 PM

Ew, nay. I love flats and brightly colored shoes, but not jellies. And sparkly jellies are the worst, save maybe for a little girl wearing them.

Posted by: iheartpink | May 10, 2006 5:28 PM

NAY! They are absolutely horrid!

Posted by: slick | May 10, 2006 6:10 PM

I must say I still have two pairs with heels from Sisley. My mom bought them for me but my feet never ever felt them! I've hidden them so she couldn't remember their existence! I was 16 when she bought them. So, ss a fashion item... is a nay.

Posted by: Uhecca | May 10, 2006 6:28 PM

Nay. They are ugly and useless. Anyone who has actually worn these to the beach knows that: A) Sand gathers between the shoe and the foot in a painful manner and B) They offer no protection of any kind from stinging things. When my daughter was little she begged for a pair for weeks until I finally caved and bought them for her. She wore them maybe twice before she couldn't stand how uncomfortable they were. Sorry. You got me started.

Posted by: Mindy | May 10, 2006 6:29 PM

I say NAY, even though I loved my bright pink ones when I was a kid. I wore them all the time. But now, I don't think I'd be caught dead in them, even at the beach or in the water.

They are sticky and most importantly, uncomfortable. At least every pair I've worn was like that.... I would only wear them in the privacy of my own home and yard, if at all.

Posted by: Sarah-Jean | May 10, 2006 7:25 PM

Nay! Because of the shininess, and the sweatiness...and some things just cannot be beautified, even with a wedge heel.

Posted by: Fionna | May 10, 2006 7:28 PM

NAY NAY NAY NAY NAY NAYY NAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!
WHY????????

If you can afford better why wear them? Maybe on the beach for protection of your feet, Why else?

Why stop there? I remember as a kid looking up to see my great aunts had purses to match those jelies with plastic roses attached, why stop there Michael Kors? add the Plastic roses as well! I love you Michael Kors, but you and your fellow designers must stop this Mu Mu , loud ugly mismatched print, large plastic bead mania, hey what about the lavender rhinestone cateye glasses? and beehive hairdo? Everybody! Let's go for the whole look! The designers are mad at us right? Why else would they be bringing these things back? Why stop at plastic roses, let's add the plastic oranges, bananas and cherries that were also the rage!

I'm calling the fashion police, I can't stand this anymore!

Posted by: lilimj | May 10, 2006 7:53 PM

I say we make those urban outfitters people walk one-just one-block in these in August. I'm pretty sure their "hearts" would quickly disolve into festering blisters of hate...
NAY!

Posted by: Meg | May 10, 2006 8:14 PM

gimme a minute 2 find some cute jellies....

Posted by: Anna S. | May 10, 2006 8:47 PM

No, no, good God no!
And just to make it obvious why I hate them - a friend of my Mums was walking in the park wearing jellies, stepped in a poo and it squished through the sides. HAH!

Posted by: Camilla C | May 10, 2006 8:49 PM

When it comes to fashion, it's a big NAY. They are too cutesy to be worn be anyone over 10 years old. If you're going to a water park or fishing or rafting, maybe, then it's okay; as long as they serve some kind of purpose, the style shouldn't detract you from wearing them. But any other time they're no good.

Posted by: Casey | May 10, 2006 8:55 PM

I found a reason to like jelly shoes!!!

Posted by: Anna S. | May 10, 2006 9:17 PM

Nay! Nay! Nay! (except for the eight and under crowd) I, too, recall having a pair when I was little. They were clear and purple and I thought I was fly. I was not fly. Grown women should certaintly not entertain the notion of wearing jellys! They're so uncomfortable and they smell like plastic. And... just ew. Just ew.

Posted by: Madeline | May 10, 2006 9:36 PM

i'd wear them on the beach, just cos you can get them wet and they don't get wrecked, but anywhere else is a plain nay.

Posted by: tracey | May 10, 2006 9:38 PM

Crap why can't the jellies fad just stay dead??

Posted by: Tiffany | May 10, 2006 9:44 PM

Nay - I associate these firmly with early childhood and much of what was wrong with the 1980s!

Posted by: Jenni | May 10, 2006 9:53 PM

Yay - but only if you're a glamourous seven year old who wants sparkly shoes that you can wade around rock pools in.

Posted by: Charlotte | May 11, 2006 12:12 AM

Nay! They're a killer on a hot summer day! your feet burn!

Posted by: CL | May 11, 2006 7:01 AM

NAY! the pair I had as a child were not only ugly, but hot, sweaty and NEVER wore in properly so I had to wear plasters all sunday.
What is the point in a 'sandal' which makes your feet HOTTER?
naynaynaynay.

Posted by: Caitlin | May 11, 2006 8:04 AM

Nay.
This shoe looks sinister....as if one day someone will flip a switch and the jelly shoe will engulf us and turn us all into jelly monsters =)

Posted by: Paula | May 11, 2006 5:41 PM

Nay. Why? Because they are akin to cheap flip-flops. I didn't even like them in the 80s. This style would look vile in ANY material. Pyoo!

Posted by: Arnez | May 11, 2006 6:02 PM

Nayot unless you're under, hm, twelve?

Posted by: K | May 11, 2006 6:59 PM

I'm not seeing the debate here. Jellies are ugly and make your feet sweaty. They give you blisters. They are cheap looking. Geez, flip flops are more respectable. Case closed.

Someone at Urban Outfitters has either never worn jellies or is smoking the crack.

Posted by: Whitney | May 12, 2006 4:17 AM

i loved jelly shoes. and i'm the only one on here that still does.

Posted by: lyn | May 18, 2006 6:10 PM

I love jelly shoes! i think they are awsome ... i am looking for a pair for the summer but i have size 8 feet so i am having difficulty ... i am only 13 but i think jelly shoes shud be the new jimmy chose (well maybe not that good) but i love them and i think those who hate themjust need to remember how cool they used to be when you were a kid. Bring back jelly shoes!
xx-xx-xx
p.s if anyone has found somewhere in the uk selling jelly shoes could you please post the web address!?

Posted by: Rach | June 29, 2006 7:57 PM

VOTE
Yay - for little girls who like cutesy things

Nay - for everyone else (including women who still think they are little girls)

REASONS
1)Most little girls can get away with wearing anything cutesy, even plastic shoes
2)They are plastic shoes; that should be reason enough
3)They are straight from the 1980s, and not the good part of the 1980s.

Posted by: Java Bean Rush | July 5, 2006 8:50 PM

The material they are using now a days is MUCH BETTER than our childhood memories.( those were like little bricks) I have a pair of Melissa that I love - they do not make my feet smell and I can wear them all day. I think it all has to do with the quality of the plastic

Posted by: Patricia | July 12, 2006 5:17 PM

The jelly shoes I own are comfortable and they aren't ugly, either. They look nicer than what I see most people wearing to church, etc. And I can wear them anywhere. They can get wet and they're easy to clean.
I have never gotten a blister or sweaty feet from wearing them. Maybe some of you are just getting the wrong size. Any shoe can give you blisters.
Try a pair from Melissa or Urban Outfitters. They're cute and comfy, and won't remind you of the 80s.

Posted by: PrAlice | July 27, 2006 11:25 PM

Nay. Walking around in a pool of One's own sweat is not appealing.

Posted by: Nicolle | August 11, 2006 8:34 PM

YAY! I am looking for a classic 80's pair but I am having trouble finding them in my size....I am 26..maybe that's why!!! I just love the memories they bring back for me and really want to find a pair to buy now :)

Posted by: Jessica | September 5, 2006 1:22 AM

YAY!!! jelly shoes are the coolest god damn things invented. cept i cant find any in my size anymore =[[ gutted!!!

Posted by: Hannah | January 12, 2007 8:59 PM

Dont HATE on jellies! I love them! Almost anything 80's is back now!! If you dont like them then dont buy them. Only the cool people will!!! Thanks!!

Posted by: Jenea' Ingle | February 5, 2007 9:25 PM

I had to check if the jellies were as bad as everybody says, so I bought a pair from Urban Outfitters and wore them a whole day, and it was the worst day in my life. My feet smelled horrible, and it was so hot that I walked in a pool of my own sweat, and I stepped on a poo in the park. (Guess you don't need an explanation about what happened next...)
I swear to God, I will ever, ever in my entire life wear jelly shoes again. Period.

Posted by: Jorunn | April 7, 2007 3:18 PM

Can anyone tell me where to find a pair of real authentic ugly-as-all-hell jellies? I want the ones with glitter and the works in them. not the new ones that are in urban outfitters but the real deal just like the 80's? looked online and cant find any, just this blog with a bunch of people talking about them.

Posted by: need Jellies | April 18, 2007 8:56 PM

Jelly shoes are awesome!! They rock. I am so glad they are back in style. I have 3 pairs already. I welcome them back with open arms!! I had a purple pair when I was a kid. I remember them very well. I had to beg my mom to buy me some. And the darned things broke, like 3 days after I had them. But....they were so neat. I loved them so much. And my mom wouldn't buy me another pair. So, now, that I'm an adult and have my own money to spend, I'm going hogwild!! I never had a problem with them making my feet sweaty before. But they did rub on my feet and give me blisters. But the new ones they have out now, are much more comfortable. So, if you don't like them, don't buy them. Simple as that. There's no need to go on a tyrade about hating them. I hate croc shoes, but you don't see me whining and crying about how ugly and dumb they are. Get over it, they're back in style and that's all there is to it. They'll die out in a few years and then you can untie the knot in your panties people. LOL

Posted by: Melissa | May 7, 2007 2:35 AM

YAY!

I fucking LOVE Jellies. I remember owning a pair of red glittery kind (reminded me of Dorothy from Wizard of Oz), and I owned a nice blue glittery pair. I loved them. My feet didn't sweat, they were comfy, and I just...can't get over them!

I have been looking for them for years.
I just love them.

One thing, they're better than Crocs ;)

Posted by: Dez | May 10, 2007 10:26 PM

Definitely, YAY!

I own a pair and they are so light and comfy! I love jelly shoes!!!!

YAAAAAAYYYY!!!

Posted by: bunny | May 16, 2007 8:53 AM

I say "yay".
You say jelly shoes are "cheap looking, sweaty and generally vulgar" but isn't that the point? The tacky look of them is the reason why you just have to do them. And not only are they some what practical on the beach, for a girl like me who acts a lot younger than her age they are spectacular. Yes darling maybe they aren't the most glamourous thing in the world, but who needs the glamorous sophisticated look apart from wannabees? The glamour pusses out there would knock these things I'm certain, but who cares? The whole point of jelly shoes is to be tacky, and look like a right freak basically.
But I'm all for it.

Posted by: queen difference... | May 25, 2007 9:08 PM

hey.. i think that the old ones from the 90s are pretty cool.. where can i get a pair now from?

Posted by: milly | June 7, 2007 9:02 PM

JELLY SHOES ARE AMAZING. MY COUSIN AND I WERE AT TJ MAX AND WERE GOING TO BUY THEM BUT THEY ONYL HAD A SIZE 10. WERE GOING TOMORROW TO BUT THEM FROM URBAN OUTFITTERS.

Posted by: Samantha | June 15, 2007 5:07 AM

Bought 3 pairs of Melissa Campana in a month ;)

Posted by: knottie | June 26, 2007 8:09 AM

I want these in every color--all the ones my mother wouldn't buy me when I was a kid!! First of all, ANY shoe that is not a sneaker is not the best shoe to wear when you're walking around all day! Also, if your feet sweat in them, don't wear them when it's 90 degrees outside! I love jellies, but I want the original ones from the 80's. I wish they would still make the neon ones. Places I have found jellies recently:

Target (clear & see-through pink - $1 and they look original)
Claires (clear, see-through pink, & see-through purple--they have a silver bow)
Hot Topic (opaque colors - turquoise blue & pink)
Urban Outfitters - swiss cheese looking
Some of the new ones are cut too big!! Gotta love jellies! :)

Posted by: Wendy | July 8, 2007 3:47 PM

Sweaty feet? Its your feet not the shoes! Have'nt you girls heard of deo feet lotion? Very effective, my feet dont sweat even if I wear my Severines all day!

Posted by: Didin | August 20, 2007 5:53 AM

I forgot: YAY ( as long as they're as nice as my Melissa's). And for the sweaty feet, if the weather is hot they'll sweat even if your wear rubber or leather shoes. Only difference is these shoes absord the sweat, try smelling them at the end of the day. My severines smell like bubble gum, no matter how long I waer them. It's a matter of feet hygiene.

The original family that started the Jelly Shoes in 1982 at the World's Fair is launching the new Jelly Shoes in Spring 2008. The new shoes have a new name and a ministry to encourage women to become all they can through faith. The new Glory Collection is still not ready to release to the public. A new-sophisticated look, innovation and style will set them apart from the Jellies of old. Keep a watch for the new name, the new look and the new mission to be released soon.

How many of you saying NAY are over thirty? I'm willing to bet a LOT.

I missed out on these when I was just a wee thing in the eighties. I'm not letting them get past me again, and if you don't like it - well, then we're not making you wear them, now are we?

Posted by: 'Miko | October 16, 2007 3:27 AM

i cannot believe fendi have copied the juju jellies i bought last year from aldo! they are exactly the same without the buckle and only cost $20!!!!! how can they justify $175 for something which is virtually the same! at the end of the day these shoes are a piece of plastic! come on fendi design your own not copy a high street brand!!!!

Posted by: gemma rorison | January 8, 2008 1:19 PM

I totally agree with Gemma Rorison, the JuJu jellies were around last summer, and are the original and best!! A big design house like Fendi should be more original!!

Posted by: LMJ | January 8, 2008 1:30 PM

I am a grade A fan of these wonderful wipe clean shoes. My favs are the juju pink with silver glitter. You won't find me strutting my stuff in the summer without them.
