Crocs: An Ugly Shoe Update!

CrocsI almost feel like I shouldn't open the big can of worms again, but blogging about crocs is somewhat unavoidable at the moment, thanks to the efforts of Manolo and friends. It was way back in April 2005 that Crocs first graced the pages of Shoewawa (ugly shoe of the week, of course), and then in December you lot voted them Ugly Shoe of the Year in the Shiny Style Awards (too right). I thought the whole episode was over, but then they appeared on the catwalk, and now they're being blogged all over the place again. There's even a Crocs Fans Blog! THIS MADNESS MUST STOP! I know they're comfy, I know they're great if you're on your feet all day, but it's all gone too far now. Now they're available in the UK.

Excuse me while I go and hand in my resignation...

According to the latest Gawker Stalker, Lou Reed was spotted recently wearing the hot pink ones. This has gone way too far now, I say we start up a petition to get them banned etc.

These things are running rampant! They are E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E and driving me mad! Each time I see them, I always think "ugly shoe of the week. Don't these people READ???" Aaaaaaaaggggggh!

I'm tempted to create a little print-out card for people to hand out to folks they see wearing crocs in the street.

If anyone can come up with a suitable slogan, bring it on!

i love these shoes!! i have a pair in navy myself. they are perfect for the beach andd are very comfortable. i am going to buy the tacks they sell to decorate the holes.

Posted by: Anna S. | July 12, 2006 5:08 PM

o yes, i forgot, they only look good on skinny ppl!!

Posted by: Anna S. | July 12, 2006 5:09 PM

ugly, but probably the most comfortable shoes ever. have the fashion oriented readers ever considered comfort over looks? apparently the answer is no.

Posted by: Another | July 12, 2006 5:09 PM

For the love of GOD! You can decorate them? It gets worse.

Please Ms Shoewawa...make it stop!!!!!!!!

Comfort over looks? Why not comfort AND looks? It can be done (see my post on aerosoles a bit further down). There are plenty of shoes out there that offer comfort without looking as awful as these.

I don't care how comfy crocs are, they need to be stopped. The white ones on staff in a hospital / nursing home etc I can just about deal with. Maybe dark green for gardeners. But as a fashion shoe - which is what they're now becoming - I just don't understand the appeal. How in the world are these flattering on anyone? They're like the lovechild of a clog and a jelly. It's my worst nightmare in shoe form.

my sisters in Israel are crazy about them - and they're quite alright if you're a slim 16-old girl with size 37. but I'm scared to death when I think what it would look like on me, 30-year old with size 41...

Posted by: Julia | July 12, 2006 5:39 PM

I actually have them in purple! But..wait for it..I work in a home for the elderly, so I only wear them at work, because I am on my feet all day :)

Posted by: Wen | July 13, 2006 2:45 PM

On a recent sailing holiday I was told they are specially designed as boat shoes - waterproof and the soles don't scratch the decks. They are very comfortable - the girl forced me (no really) to try them, but they are somewhat lacking in elegance.

Anyone who wears these out of choice and not for work etc should be put into a corner and made to think about what they have done!!

I did a little bit of shopping today at Bluewater and was horrified to find there was a stall dedicated to Crocs...arrrrgghhh! I even saw a woman donning a pair of pink ones, I didn't think it was possible for shoes to look worse ON!

i hate crocs. i think they are the ugliest shoes in the world. but today at work (on my feet at a restaurant for hours upon hours) i tried on my managers crocs. she said they didn't slip and were very comfy so i tried on the monsters and my feet felt like they were in heaven. good thing the rest of my outift is horrendous, so i might as well just go for ugly all the way, and rely on cute headbands or something.

An 'upper end' department store I work at frequently (ok, Nordstrom) sells Crocs, and to add to the Lower Depths Of Hellishness to it, they sell these little things you can lodge in the holes of said Crocs. So let's just say the Pacific Northwest of the US is infested.

I don't see the point of schlepping around in rubber clogs, they are fugly to be kind to Crocs.

I buy shoes to make people do a double-take of perhaps envy or admiration - not nausea....no Crocs in my closet...ever.

crocs are fashionable, because they're disposable (pretty cheap), comfortable, relatively new, and instantly recognisable. Much of fashion in the past has been ugly, i mean, remember the shoulder pad craze of the 80s? but don't worry, they'll be passe soon enough.
ps, i have 2 pair (orange, and light blue) and have been looking for the white ones. difficult to find for some reason...

Crocs are the worst. And because I hate them so, I bought the domain I Hate Crocs Dot Com (http://www.ihatecrocs.com) in an effort to end the Crocs pandemic once and for all. Rally around! Stop the Crocs outbreak!

Thank god someone else shares my mutual disgust at these abominations!!!!!!!! I even did a post today on why a man who wears these will NEVER, EVER get a date. ;) Keep up the great work, fellow Shoe-fiend.

I am so sorry none of you people have ever seen the crocs ballet flats... every bitt as comfy, but far more cute. They have them at Bloomy's

Posted by: Erica | August 11, 2006 1:34 AM

I agree that these are pretty ugly. Looks like something you should wear gardening, not out shopping or to dinner.

we have came up with new designs for crocs sandals .
this is the first time someone has augmented the famous crocs design in such a radical and beautiful way...
you can find the new crocs design at www.Roscom.co.il עיצוב קרוקס
Thank you very much .

I think these shoes are so light and comfortable that people ignore the fact that they aren't cute. But when you're just relaxing at home or going on a serious shopping spree these are a good pair of shoes.

guys you lot need to give in and realise these shoes are a part of life now, you might as well give in and enjoy the comfort that only these shoes will bring you.
Go on next stop http://www.jellyegg.com i recently bought some flip flops and any excuse i get to wear them they are on my feet.

Dear Croc o' haters,
I think you guys and the Croc wearing people are a little nuts. You however are vindictive while they are just wearing shoes they like. Who cares what other people wear? Its so Yuppie control-freak stupid to put up a website like this. What other people wear has never concerned me. I have a friend with very arthritic feet and she loves these shoes. I would not tell her they are ugly for the world. Why don't you go after the people who wear their underwear showing. Now that is real bad taste.

Yours truly,
Beth Boyle

Lighten up people. My crocs share closet space with Jimmy Choo. When you are going to be on your feet all day...say at a photo shoot, or amusement park...these little beauties can save your life....er...your feet.

As we found out in "Raise the Red Lantern" if your feet aren't happy neither are you. I think Aerosoles are equally ugly...sorry.
