Cheap or Chic Challenge: Patent Ankle Strap Wedges

Wedgehsd
One of the things that strikes me when the high street bring out their own versions of designer looks is that they're quite often nicer than the originals. Obviously there are quality issues to consider, but on a purely aesthetical basis the cheaper brands often do well to tone down harsh looks so they're more wearable. With that in mind, from now on Friday at Shoewawa will include a new column, the Cheap or Chic Challenge. Two similar shoes will be posted - one designer and one high street - and you'll have to vote on which one you like the most. Obviously some weeks you'll spot the designer style straight away, but try not to let that sway your vote. Take a look at these two wedges for starters. The boat-like style is quite a difficult look, but which take is better? The subtle ones on the left or the bold ones on the right?

If you don't already know which is which, we'll reveal the designers and shops the following week, just like Yay or Nay.

Definitely the subtle ones on the left. (the ones on the right look part shoe, part kitchen scourer!)

I like the ones on the right best and I would guess that they're the designer ones. Could be wrong though...

based on the strap the right ones are the designer ones, though the wedge just look so cheap, so I would prefer the left one (except that the ankle strap is not that nice)

The ones on the left for me. I reckon the right hand one is the designer.

defo the ones on left...much nicer

I prefer the ones on the right, although the sole does look like gross cheap plasticky stuff. I like the velvet trim and the strap.

LIke the left better then the designer one on right.

actually on a second thought, the shape of the right one is much nicer, the "leather" of the left one looks so cheap and the interior too, THe only thing is that the left one might cost 25$ and the right ones 500$.
but if I had to choose I would go with the right one.

They are both hideous. The one on the left will make a woman's leg looks like it ends in a giant clubbed foot; I've seen these in person on an ultra-thin woman, and from even the slightest distance, her feet looked inexplicably fat and lumpy. The one on the right avoids the clubbed-foot look by breaking up the color, but the rubber heel is so light that if it is ever worn outside of a carpeted house it will instantly turn dingy gray.

Ditto Suzanne except I don't think they're hideous, well, I don't think the one's on the right are hideous. The left pair are probably more mainstream, you don't have different colors to deal with but they look huge - monstrous - like giant hooves. The one's on the right, however, could still look dainty due to the tiny strap and contrast. The rubber, which others have said looks cheap, to me says comfort. I think they're stylish in a dressed up cherokees or famolores kind of way.

I know which ones are real, and I still think both are hideous.

I definately like the ones on the left. The sole on the right is gross

For the shape of the toe and the color (but not the ankle strap) I prefer the look of the ones on the left.

Ooh, there's 2 Julia's. This'll be confusing. Anyway =P

I'm retracting my bit about knowing which ones were real, because I was wrong :P

i like the one on the left bc the toe looks more normal. the one on the right looks like the toe is squished into the bottom of the shoe. also that color sole would get nasty looking very quickly

The ones on the right hand side are way cuter, they look better quality 2!

The one on the left gets my vote. The one on the right looks like 'Bikini Bottom' couture. The material and color of that wedge just wreaks too much Spongebob Squarepants.

I prefer the ones on the left (but think the designer are on the right).

the ones on the right are much better looking. Maybe you are just not picturing the right outfit.
Think:
a nice outdoor luncheon with some girlfriends. Somewhere light and fresh in Manhattan. It's fall, the wind is blowing just enough for your hair to flow, but not enough to mess it up. You're in a nice flowy, but a little fitted grey/black dress that reaches just above the knees. Maybe an extremely subtle print that can only be seen a few feet away. No jacket. It's not cold enough. A nice necklace, substancial, but not overwhealming. You have your favorite tan clutch with all your essentials, and a small watch/bracelet. You put on these shoes(on the right) and strut to your meet, the wind whisping through your hair and feeling like a runway model as photographers and videographers attempt to catch you in slow motion. And when you finally get there. Your friends say," wow where ever did you buy those shoes. And you can talk for hours about your lives. No not "sex and the city" type stuff, but more romantic and invigorating. Just take a second and imagine that.

Plus, the shose on the left would be to clunky with a dark brown heel.

Hi, did I miss something? There is a new challenge, but no answer on this one as of yet. My two cents btw: I am certain the cheap ones are the ones on the right. If they are not...well, woe on the designer that allowed such poor stitching. *shudder*
