Ugly Shoe of The Week

diorcw.jpg
Okay, so they may have been suitable as part of Christian's Dior's show at Haute Couture Paris S/S Week, but besides that and the film 'Memoirs of a Geisha' these high, wooden and undoubtedly painful platforms aren't very practical. Parading (or rather shuffling) around on the catwalk, models in the Dior show definitely earned their keep this week when they attempted stilt walking while avoiding falling down from the sheer weight of their dramatic costumes and extravagant headpieces. The traditional Japanese-style sandals appeared in a variety of colours and materials with rope straps, buckles and studs. As part of the overall show the shoes were an amazing work of art, anywhere else and they would probably make you a laughing stock. [Kim Foster]

Reptile-detailed sale shoes at Yoox

yoox-reptile-detail.jpg
Full-on crocodile embossed leather or python effect (snake skin to you and me) isn't everyone's cup of tea and PVC mock croc can look seriously ghastly. However, good quality leather and just a touch of reptile print can really add that much-needed extra zing to a court shoe. The designer offerings currently on sale at Yoox include quite a lot of great reptile-detailed numbers at bargain prices...

Vintage 1980s wing detail shboots

vintageshboots.jpgI know a lot of people (myself included) are still not sold on the idea of vintage (read: second hand) footwear, but I couldn't resist these retro shboots. Like a combination of this season's ankle boot / and Schuh's dominatrix chic winged stiletto, these are pure 80s overkill. Think Jem and the Holograms, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. They'll either appeal to you instantly, or you'll wonder if I've finally lost my mind. Either way, they're £28 from Candy Says, and could be yours if you're a UK 5.5.

J. Renee ladybird slides

ladywbird.jpgCute n' kitsch or just too kitsch to be cool? I can't quite decide, although I have a feeling that my irrational hatred of toe-post shoes would probably end up making the decision for me with these. They're by J. Renee and although you can't see it too well in this picture, the ladybird is actually made out of rhinestones and is set on a clear plastic strip, which would presumably make it look like it was painted directly onto your foot when you wore them. Nope, the jury's still out for me, I'm afraid: if you decide you like them, you'll find them at Zappos, for $79.

Schuh 'Boda' courts

boda.jpg I know, it’s a white high heel, but look, it’s a pretty one, I promise! Actually, this is more of a mid-height heel, and technically, the colour is "stone" (or so say Schuh, anyway), so you can get rid of any "white stiletto" stereotypes you maybe harbouring and look instead at the lovely frill detail on the side of these slightly chunk courts. These are £49.99 and would look great with a faded pair of blue jeans, I think, but if you don't like the "stone", they're also available in black.

Givenchy unique T-bar sandals

1396-279157-p.jpg These Givenchy 564920 (as named by Zappos Couture) unique T-bar sandals would definitely be able hold their own in amongst a sea of shoes and gowns. Head-turning and stunning are a couple of adjectives that spring to mind to describe the metallic leather and edgy buckles. So, if you have any red carpet events to attend (the Oscars, perhaps? Not invited? Me neither, pah!) and would like to make your mark, then these could be a pair to consider. In fact if you wore these to any event, I'm sure you would make an impression. At $679, there would be one person who'd definitely notice your new shoes - your bank manager.

Ernesto Esposito red tartan courts

esposito-tartan.jpgI'm off to a Burns Night party on the weekend so have been ogling tartan footwear and accessories for the last couple of weeks. Well, given the date and the host's Antipodean boyfriend, it's actually a combined Burns Night and Australia Day party - meaning, aside from plaid, guests have the option of showing off their pasty white winter legs in shorts and flip-flops (thongs to our Australian readers). Being Australian myself, I feel a bit unpatriotic, but am choosing the much more seasonally-appropriate tartan, and think these Ernesto Esposito courts might do the trick. Available in this lovely bold red, the black patent detailing on the toe offsets it beautifully and definitely scores 60s trend points. Better still, it's on sale for £94 (was £134), perhaps saving enough for a sporran to match.
