I first became aware of the danger by reading Manolo's Shoe Blog, but the Washington Post's new article has reiterated the danger - Crocs and other soft-soled shoes can get stuck in the teeth of escalators and cause minor to severe injuries. Sandals, tennis shoes, flip flops and other "shoe entrapments" have been yanked the bowels of those moving stairs. A few horrifying accounts describe Crocs and immitation Crocs on the feet of children becoming stuck as the escalator stairs converge and causing toes to be ripped off or mutilated to the point of needing amputation...
The spokesfolk at Crocs Inc., however, point out that the danger lies mainly in "behavioral issue[s]" of children," and "that the best way to raise awareness is to continue to endorse the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation and its education and prevention efforts." Uh huh...I'm sure any injuries can be eventually tracked down to negligence and 'behavior' so I'm not sure if thats a very good defense, but I do think education and prevention through awareness is a fantastic start to any problem solving. In any case - be careful out there! Don't forget the Shoewawa contest: if you see any Crocs in the wild, take a photo of 'em and send em our way!

now it's proven: Crocs are THE EVIL :P
btw, today i seen a man with light gray Crocs... xD
oh god, crocs... i saw an older lady today with a bright orange pair on... with socks! stripey socks!
I saw a 6'5" 350# guy, wearing a "flat top" with bleach blonde tips and Drew Cary glasses sporting a pair of neon yellow/orange. All he needed some black scrubs and he would have looked like Daffy Duck, or white for Foghorn Leghorn! I think I'm the only person at this 700 bed hospital that doesn't own at least 1 pair!
ok, when are they finally going to make these things against the law! I am still in shock, that they are so popular, I remember when I first saw them, and thought well there is a style that won't last long! WRONG!
Oh wow... I always thought they were evil. And you'd think that they'd be practical because you can get them wet right? Wrong. A kid at my pool slipped on his own crocs, fell flat on his face and made a bloody mess everywhere.
Sad to say that I actually own a pair of knock-off Crocs. (They only cost me $10. There's no way in hell I'd pay $30 for the real thing. They're too hideous to pay full price.) But they are my house and driving shoes. And they're black, so even if I do manage to be seen in public wearing them, they're less conspicuous than, say, lime green. Anyway, what's worse than the Crocs themselves are those stupid charms you can buy to go in the holes of the Crocs. Absolutely horrendous.
was thinking of buying my tots crocs for their kid-friendly style. but these escalator threat was on news here in philippines. several complainants came to media with almost the same accidents with their kids on escalator wearing crocs.
Crocs are the most hideous things anyone could ever wear on their feet. There is no way in Hell i would ever slip my feet into a pair... if i wanted to wear rubber on my feet then i would go out and buy rubber flip-flops. Those things should be banned from ever being worn again... Burn them i say.. BURN THEM!!!
thats my two cents for now :)
Hi
I know they are ugly, and hideous!!! But really Croc's are SO COMFORTABLE, and LIGHT!!!! To those of us with problem feet they are a Godsend!!Even podiatrists recommend them because of the wide toe bed. I just wish they could make them a little less ugly.
To be honest, when I first seen the shoes on the market, I was also mystified, but once you start wearing them its different, just so comfy. Anyway my favourite brand is BO Shoes for me and my kids. Crocs look oversized on my nippers and my feet anyway. BO is far more fitted and for me that makes a difference. Plus the designs are more kids focused. I havent seen BO on the UK market yet and bought mine in Sweden. I hope retailers take on this brand as I think they could do well. Glad this cover story was printed because now I will be extra vigilant to what I put on my kids feet.
Crocs are *huge* here in Israel. But even the local distributor referred to them as "the ugliest shoes to hit the planet!" The most popular style here is the "beach shoes" with the holes on the top and sides. Ugly as they are, the are the most comfortable shoes around now that I have foot pain. And they're great for wearing into the Dead Sea. The salt crystals on the bottom hurt your feet as you wade in and flip-flops float away.
BTW, Lady G, they're not rubber. They're closed cell foam. I can't stand rubber on my feet in the summer - too hot and sweaty because rubber doesn't breathe.

I guess you have a good lawyer on retainer always looking to achieve the great american dream. Get injured and blame someone else and get rich quick!
How about a little personal responsibility and parental guidance.
If the product is defective, then they should be taken off the shelf. So many items that we purchase are made so cheap and they charge us a small fortune. The big companies do not care about the consumer. They are only interested in lining their pockets. I believe that if someone is injured because of a defective, foreign product, they should be compensated. Let's start demanding our products are made in the USA!
How is a shoe defective if it gets caught in an escalator? Put your kids in harder soled shoes and take responsibility for your own life and family and stop looking to lawyers to save you, stacy.
I would just like to say, one of my friends was running in crocs, rolled over on her ankle, and broke it. She now has 2 plates and 5 bolts in there keeping it together.
I never liked crocs, a memorable moment being when i saw aa lime green pair matched with hot pink socks and white spandex. A lovely combination *shivers* ...
Do you see any celebrity's wearing Crocs do you
NO
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WERE THEM EATHER
I agree with LadyG that "Crocs are the most hideous things anyone could ever wear on their feet. But please don't burn them. Their acrid fumes would burn a giant new hold in the ozone layer and probably put global warming into overdrive. Come to think of it, the production of those nasty things is probably already a prime contributor to climate change.

Crocs may be ugly, but when you are on your feet all day, they are truly comfortable. The Mary Janes and the sandals look fine. The beach style (I have a black pair) are not really attractive, but they are comfortable! When I'm on me feet at work or shopping or out with my kids, I want comfort, and these do the trick! And I've never had a problem with them on an escalator.
I watch "TLC What not to wear". Never once have Stacy or Clinton have ever said its okay to wear these god awful things someone called a shoe. My opinion to these shoes "PURE LAZYNESS" No one in there right mind should wear this shoes on a regular basis. Leave them in the flower garden and to mow grass in them thats were they are to be worn!!!!
good grief!
i cannot believe the violence in the words of these commenters
they are just shoes!
lord have mercy people!
if you don't like them, don't wear them or their knock offs
those of us that prefer comfortable shoes have the right to own them.
i have the flip flops and haven't ever worn any more comfortable shoe
