Louis Vuitton's Feerique t-Strap sandals - shoes with gold-plated heels

louisvuitton-gold-plated.jpg

Talk about conspicuous consumption! I know Paul Simon sang about Diamonds on the Soles of Your Shoes, but this is getting ridiculous. These are Louis Vuitton's 'Feerique' sandals, and that's not just a gold coloured heel and sole - no, that's actual gold plating. Well, they're certainly eye-catching, with that cut-out heel and purple satin straps (yes, that is gold plating on the buckle, too), but I suspect these shoes may be the footwear equivalent of the "trophy wife" - the kind of thing people will buy just for the sake of being able to walk around on gold. Or maybe they'll buy them because they love them, who knows? At $855 they're certainly not cheap, but I'm actually surprised they're not more expensive given what they're made of. Would you wear them, though?

tacky!

Interesting how blatantly expensive accessories are always hideous, to compensate for the high price. It must be a way of protecting the wearer's humility.

They are fabulous, if too expensive.

They aren't quite the most hideous shoes I've ever seen - I think I'd give that award to crocs - but they're close

I would wear them, after seeing them on C.Milian they looked hot and these ones are GOLD!

They look a bit like something Irregular Choice would make on a sane day. That said, if I ever wore them I'd be too worried that walking would make the gold chip away (though if I were wearing $855 shoes I'm guessing I wouldn't be walking anywhere anyway)

I like the color combo and think I could even like the shoes except for the heel design. The crumple effect looks like a Jiffy Pop container.

Amber, I think you hit it on the head so to speak when you said this is quite possibly a "trophy wife" shoe. Maybe I shouldn't read the Financial Times and Economist before WWD and Shoewawa, but I like to link fashion to all aspects of life - politics, religion, socioeconomics, et. al. In today's world, Do we really need more impracticality and more pretentiousness? From a design perspective this is quite an interesting and delightfully playful shoe...However, in a world where mary janes, flats, sandals, converse keds, and, even, crocs are ubiquitous, What market or need does these shoes actually address?
