If the Shoe Fits: The great shoe-spending diet

foreveramber.jpg Amber McNaught writes...

If you're a regular reader of this column, it will probably come as no surprise to learn that I love my shoes. Lately, though, I've been thinking that I probably love my shoes just a little too much, because while I returned from my recent trip to the States with no less than six pairs of new shoes, I now find that I have absolutely nothing to wear with them. Whoops.

I think most women (or certainly most of the women I know) have their own particular "can't possibly resist" items when it comes to shopping. For some, it's makeup, while others buy dresses, and still others buy handbags. For me, it's shoes. When I see a pair of shoes I love, I absolutely must have them, regardless of whether I need them, or have anything to actually wear with them. This is how I came to have a closet stocked with lots of the kind of glittery sandals you'd wear to, say, The Oscars, when I rarely go anywhere more exotic than the restaurant round the corner.

Well, no more! After a recent shopping trip in which I managed to spend all of my money without buying any useful winter outfits, I've decided enough is enough. Something has to go, and unfortunately, it has to be my shoe-spending. For a few months at least. OK, a few weeks, let's say...

I have examined my shoe collection carefully, and I think this is absolutely do-able. I'm pretty certain that, as things stand, I have at least one pair of shoes that will be suitable for every type of event I could possibly be invited to take part in, and to go with every outfit I own. Rationally, I know the truth is that I don't actually need any more shoes. Will I actually be able to stop myself buying them, though, that's the question?

Well, I'm going to try, anyway. As of this week, I'm going on a shoe-spending diet, which will last at least until Christmas. I'll allow myself to buy new clothes, which I badly need, but absolutely no new shoes will cross the threshold of my home. In the meantime, a bunch of old clothes and shoes have been put on eBay, and a clear-out is in progress. Can I at last manage to acquire that perfect capsule wardrobe I've always wanted? And can I possibly resist all the lovely party shoes that'll be coming into stock around about now?

I guess I'm about to find out...

Don't woory you're not alone... I can't resist to shoes and I can't buy anymore of them either for the moment because I really don't have money (or space) since my last pair of beautiful boots... And I agree I don't know how they design clothes but they don't fit with all the shoes I have. Sometime when I'm depressed I like to just open my closet and look at them...so peaceful (Ok I'm a freak, a shoefreak).
Be brave on your shoes diet.

I once bought 14 prs of shoes in one day, so I know where you're coming from.
