Stuart Weitzman's response to Diablo Cody

We had quite a mixed response to yesterday's post about how Oscar winner Diablo Cody refused to wear Stuart Weitzman's $1 million shoes to Sunday's Oscars, with some of you applauding Cody's integrity and others arguing that she could have shown a little more grace over the matter.

Having read Stuart Weitzman's side of the story, I think I'd personally have to agree with the latter camp. It seems that Cody was involved in the design of the shoes, which makes her "nobody asked me" comment seem a little strange. Weitzman told TMZ: "I have been making a special pair of shoes to be worn at the Academy Awards for a number of years. This year - more so than in any previous year - the lady who was given the opportunity to wear it was quite involved in the design process. Diablo Cody sent me examples of the type of shoes she liked and actually did the final selection herself, choosing a three-inch retro style T-strap as well as a changeover pair of ballerinas."

The designer continued: "She chose to adorn the shoes with medium-sized diamond roses from three different sizes offered to her. Why she seems to be so surprised as to the attention being paid to her and these shoes, I cannot answer. It should certainly come as no surprise that a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes would generate excitement at the Academy Awards."

Despite Cody's comments, however, there seems to be no hard feelings from Weitzman's side, at least. He said: "Regardless, what should matter is the fact that this talented woman won an Oscar this weekend. I offered her the opportunity initially because I so enjoyed her film, and I'm very happy for her success. I wish her all the best."

That is class. Diablo Cody has a thing to learn about that it seems.

Can this man possibly be more classy? I think not. I would be outraged if I were him.

Millions dollars shoes??? I'll wear them!

That is odd. I'd thought the whole thing was her agent acting without consulting her. Hmm.

Remember, she's an ex-striper. She might not know the meaning of 'class'. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying stripers don't have class.
Getting all this attention after your previous career might go to your head!

This controversy gets even better:

http://defamer.com/360533/exclusive-the-truth-behind-diablo-codys-missing-million-dollar-shoes

It looks like her stylist was the one who approached Mr. Weitzman about designing a pair of shoes for Diablo Cody for the Oscars. Then after the several meetings where design decisions took place between Cody, Weitzman, and the stylist, the shoe was made and given to Cody.

The problem is once press got a hold of this information, people labeled her as hypocrite (indie queen wearing million dollar shoes). So Cody decided stop this bad press by making the (very poor) decision of ranting about the shoes on her myspace. Except that the real truth about the shoes came back and bit her in the *ss.

I think Weitzman ended up getting lots of publicity anyways, and probably more than otherwise. And wasn't that his whole goal?

And yes, his response was very well-written. Not quite believable - he's got to be at least annoyed if not enraged - but who said you had to be perfectly honest in this industry?
