I know the received wisdom in the shoe-world is that ankle straps= "bad", but I'm having a bit of a "thing" at the moment for really thick ankle straps, like the ones on these silver 'Tam' pumps by Marciano. The thick straps give the shoe a bit of a bondage look, while the silver uppers make them nicely dressy, and a good way to add a bit of edge to a flirty, feminine dress. They're $229.95 at Nordstrom.
