I appreciate that there's a divide here - and I'm not denying the popularity of comfortable and snuggly ugg boots and their ilk. But I personally can't stand them. They had a moment maybe 5 years ago when they looked just about acceptable, but nowadays I can't help seeing uggs as a played-out fad that doesn't do many people any favours.
That said, on a day like today it's easy to see why so many people do veer towards the warm and cosy side of footwear. So I've been searching for something warm that's also a bit more stylish. Don't forget that many Ugg styles cost upwards of £150, so I'm not simply being snobby about price: you can get plent of warm boots at the same price point and below that will keep you stylish and snug.
So far am tempted by this rugged-looking style by Levi's (pictured above). They're a classic style that's been made to perfection by the quality jeans people whose garments rarely bow to the elements. These would be great for a walk in the snow and would look stylish under jeans, too. They're £99.90 (with 30% reduction) at Dress for Less
Of course, if you CAN afford to go high-end, there are all sorts of wonderful warm styles to help you walk in the winter wonderland of style. My favourite for this winter has to be See by Chloé's shearling trim knee-high boots, pictured above. I adore the little pocket! If you can reach deep enough into yours, they're £405 at Net-a-Porter
If you're really looking for something a bit different, you might like this space-age new style by Lacoste. The eyecatching moon boots remind me of some I had at school, that saw me through the '87 London snow storm - and I definitely came out of that without losing any toes. If they look like just the thing to warm your toes, you can pick up a pair at Office for £30
