Between the ages of about 5 and 12, Clarks and Start Rite were the only footwear names I was really aware of. For most of that time they were fairly stuffy brands, making sensible school shoes for sensible Mums to buy for their long-suffering kids.

But then came the more child-friendly diffusion brands: Magic Steps, the 'Princess' shoes that every girl wanted, and the more casual unisex 'Hardware' range, which made fun trainers for rough and tumble. I'll never forget the pair I owned, or the blue and yellow badge that came with them. But I had forgotten the TV ad, which I stumbled across earlier in the week on YouTube, and the memories came flooding back.

What footwear do you remember from your childhood, and did Mum and Dad want you to have it?
