With a few notable exceptions including Burberry, much of footwear interest on the runways this season was not so much focused on the shoes themselves, but on the interplay between shoes and hosiery. Jaeger's dazzling colour block effect, for example, was created by teaming brightly-coloured socks and tights with shoes that gapped in just the right places.

In her Paris Fashion Week show this weekend, Stella McCartney created a similar effect in monochrome. Her shoes were classic: almost exclusively black, white or cream, with a few two-tone pieces. As ever, her faux-leather footwear was exquisitely cut, but we were most struck by the way she teamed it with patterned legwear that mimicked the embellishments on her dramatic black and white dresses.
