Shoewawa Interview: Nadene Stevenson of Ruby Rocks Footwear
Here at Shoewawa we love nothing better than chancing upon a new shoe label that presses all the right buttons, and Ruby Rocks Footwear is our latest obsession. Shown above are two gorgeous pieces from the current collection: the Olivia leopard wedge (£50) and Mia ankle boot (£75).
What we love about Ruby Rocks is their commitment to selling cute shoes that really make a statement, always at affordable prices. Keen to find out more, we spoke to Ruby Rocks founder Nadene Stevenson to get the lowdown on this fun young label.
Interview with Nadene Stevenson of Ruby Rocks
Shoewawa: When did you start up your label and how long have you been selling shoes?
Nadene Stevenson: I've been selling shoes for over 25 years, private label initially but when I started my own business I wanted to create something with personality. I'd worked with Jenny at Ruby Rocks Ltd who owns the label and loved what she did with the clothing - the name and ethos felt right and I knew just what I wanted to do. That was almost a year ago. You can read our story on our website.
Where can I buy Ruby Rocks footwear?
We have a network of around 40 independent retailers in the UK and Ireland with more coming on board daily. You can find us online too at Very, Love Your Shoes, Barratts, or Jake Shoes. More details can be found on our Facebook page or you can contact us for details.
What is Ruby Rocks' style ethos?
We want our girl to feel sexy, a million dollars whatever her budget. We want our designs to sit apart from the norm and reflect the edgy, quirky individuality that is the Ruby Rocks Brand. It's up to the minute fashion with a nod to the past. It's beauty, it's fun, it's attention to detail, wearable, sexy and now.
What do you look for when buying shoes for yourself?
A point of difference, interesting materials a touch of glamour and of course comfort is a real bonus.
How did you manage to balance starting up a business with being a Mum?
I have a wonderfully supportive husband! I'm creative with my time and commitments but it does mean working into the night on a regular basis, that's not too hard when you love what you do.
Some of your current collection has quite a retro vibe - does this reflect your personal style?
I always look for something different when looking at clothes and accessories whether it is amazing material or detail. We mix vintage with modern ideas to produce unusual and fashionable styles and I guess my personal style reflects that. I love style, I love accessories and I love shoes.
Where do you shop for shoes when buying for yourself?
Office has some really great shoes, every season they are always on the button trend wise. Aldo are also on my go to list, every season you find something new and interesting and the materials are always of a good quality too. I don't have rules - quality and value is important as a working mum but I can always be tempted by something new and a little bit different. I also have quite large feet, size 42, so often struggle finding shoes that fit. I can very rarely find shoes in my size in indies which is one of the reasons why our prepacks include a size 42.
Who is your biggest current style crush?
There are so many, Fearne Cotton; Pixie Lott; Mollie King; Caroline Flack; Lydia Bright to name a few. All have their own style.
Favourite shoe designer of all time?
Nicholas Kirkwood is amazing, his creations are a work of art. His colour and material combinations really get your attention making a statement, this is what we are trying to achieve with Ruby Rocks.
