Flat and sensible is all the rage this summer, and you won't go far wrong with a pair of wooden-soled Mary Janes in your wardrobe. Easy to pair with the season's 90s-inspired looks, they're those shoes you never realise quite how much you needed till you've had them on your feet all summer...

Topshop has a great answer to this pressing wardrobe need, and it's available in three colours (black, tan or pale pink) priced at £52. Made from real leather with a subtle grain and wooden centred sole, they're almost like a clog/Doc Marten hybrid with a summery open-sided cut. The black is probably my choice for wearing with SS 2013's monochrome prints and blocks, but the paler colours will also be endlessly useful for summer dressing.

If you're wavering over a clog or a more substantial shoe for the start of summer, this style seems to bridge the gap between the two pretty well. I can see them looking good with tights too - so they'll be ideal for cooler days or for those chilly nights at festivals...
