Shoe Review: M&S Insolia patent pumps
My love of shoes is well-documented but when it comes to my own purchases I tend to shrink back from styles that are excessively high; particularly when they're closed-off and look like they might pinch. Yup, I'm a bit of a high heel wuss, but I do love the way they look: this season's pointed-toe pumps are amazingly elegant and chic worn with floaty summer frocks, but it wasn't a look I expected to be able to pull off (or, indeed, put on)...
Then I spotted this patent pump from Marks and Spencers' Insolia range, which is made to be kinder to the feet than your average high heels. Having owned a few styles from this range already, I can vouch for how comfortable the pieces are and tend to approach the collection in a completely different way when shopping for shoes: instead of shying away from those notorious styles, I go for the highest I can find, because I know I can wear them pain free!
So when I was offered the chance to roadtest a pair from the current collection, I immediately opted to try out some nude pink platform courts, which looked like they'd provide instant polish to my summer wardrobe. And I wasn't disappointed: here I am wearing the all-purpose neutral heels with one of my loudest neon numbers in the office:
The look of the shoes was everything I'd hoped for and more: with a gentle platform and slender heel they're not dissimilar from the L.K Bennett 'Sledge' shoes so frequently worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, but they've got a bit more of a fashion edge that stops them from being too plain or frumpy: I love the super slick finish on the leather, and the sharp points at the toe; the mix of classic and contemporary makes them equally suitable for dressed up and casual occasions.
But are they comfortable? I have to admit that even with my prior knowledge of Insolia I was skeptical before trying them on: patent leather has a habit of being unforgiving on the feet, and those heels are certainly verging on the lofty. But once again the M&S magic has worked, and the shoes fit me like a glove. You know that feeling of relief you get when 'dismounting' from a pair of heels at the end of the day? I haven't had that with these - they're so comfy I barely notice I'm wearing them, even over bare feet.
M&S Autugraph coated leather platform shoes with Insolia are £49.50, here
