My search for the perfect pair of flats

me.jpg Laura Street writes...

I hate trainers: I don't really get the hype around them. I have one pair and don't even think that they're particularly comfortable. I never, ever do sport so have no physical requirement for a pair. Because of this, I pretty much live in flats (unless I'm brave enough for heels which I'm working on!). My flats are worn until they are almost falling apart which angers my Mother to the max. This week it reached a point where even I thought it had gone too far so went out in search of new, slightly waterproof cheap flats. I object to paying lots for flat shoes as I will wear them out and/or get bored of them. They also have to be comfortable...

If the Shoe Fits: The old woman who lived in her shoes

the%20old%20woman%20who%20lived%20in%20her%20shoes.jpg Amber McNaught writes...

One of my favourite Sex and the City quotes comes from Carrie, who has just found herself in financial dire straights. "I spent $40,000 on shoes and I have nowhere to live?" she says, horrified. "I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!"

I can relate. I may not have spent quite $40,000 on shoes (Not yet, anyway), but I do have enough of them that if I ever find myself homeless, I reckon I'll be able to fashion myself a pretty sizeable cardboard-box-home from all of the shoe boxes I've collected over the years. The proof of this came this weekend, when we decided to do a bit a Spring Winter clean out. "You know I could probably put up some more shoe shelves for you in this wardrobe," said my husband, gesturing to a newly-empty space. I immediately agreed - and then I realised that doing this will mean that I now have shoes in every single storage space in our home. And some more at my parents'. Oops.

What's more important to you - style, price or comfort?

uncomfy.bmp Lucy Hulme writes...

Amber and I have now both admitted our deep dark shoe secrets - that we each own a pair of Uggs. Yes, we're ashamed, and no we didn't buy them because we thought they were the height of fashion. The reason was comfort, all the way.

I also own a fair few pairs of hopelessly impractical shoes. There are the wedge heels that I bought from Topshop a few years ago that don't really fit but I just had to have them. There are also the fantastic red court shoes from Faith that weren't available in a size 6 so I bought them on the basis that it wouldn't hurt that much if I had to scrunch my toes up a tiny little bit to get them on.

If the Shoe Fits: A shocking shoe confession

foreveramber.jpgAmber McNaught writes...

There's no easy way to say this, especially not to an audience of stylish shoe fanatics, so I'm just going to come right out with it: I bought a pair of Ugg boots.

Trust me, this surprised me just as much as it probably surprises you. And it really surprised my family, who're used to see me tripping around in heels every day, and tend to ask me if I'm feeling OK if I decide to wear a pair of flats for a change. I'm well known amongst my friends for being a high-heels girl through and through, and everyone who knows me knows that no matter what I do, I'll be doing it in the most unsuitable shoes imaginable. Until now.

Shoe-centric world: Do celebrity shoe choices affect yours?

640719172_l.jpg Orla Doherty writes...

I'll have to admit, I have a strange addiction to celebrity tittle tattle, and I could probably keep you up to date with the comings an goings of even the most insignificant and worthless of showbiz types. While I enjoy passing unfounded judgement on the clothes of said celebrities, I'm always at odds as to whether I should buy into anyone else's style.

These famous girls are lucky enough to have smart people behind the scenes picking out fantastic clothes, and, of course, shoes, for them to strut down the red carpet in, and they have the added luxury of the bank balance to splurge. Almost every red carpet in LA will have one pair of Louboutin heels grace its pile throughout an evening. But does that encourage your coveting, or dispel it?

Tips on how to wear in shoes - as suggested by the Shoewawa readers!

76651952.jpgLucy Hulme writes...

A few months ago, I told you about Victoria Beckham's advice to all high heel fans out there, whereby wearing a new pair of heels around the housew ith a pair of thick socks should loosen them up to fit your foot better. Many of you agreed, and lots of you came up with loads of other fabulous ideas as well. Carry on reading to see what they were!

1. Take some newspaper sheets and shape them inside the shoe so they're tight. Then pour alcohol (from a chemist) around the paper until it's wet outside, and put it in the shoe again. Apparently this is fabulous for making leather stretch if you have a pair of leather shoes which are pinching, but it takes around three days to work. Alternatively, as Arelya suggested, pouring the alcohol in and then wearing thick socks works even more quickly.

How much care do you take of your feet?

bad-feet.jpg

While browsing through the photos of shoes at London Fashion Week I couldn't help but notice the truly awful state of some of the models' feet. Callouses, broken toenails, chipped nail polish - and that was just one model!

Of course, catwalk models have a harder time than most (no, really) when it comes to shoes, because they don't always have the luxury of a perfect fit, and sometimes have to force their poor feet into whatever size is available. The rest of us, though, have no such excuse, and so I'm wondering: how much care do you take of your feet?
