Five ways to instantly improve your shoe wardrobe!

shoewardrobe.jpgGemma Cartwright on how to makeover your shoe collection without (much) effort...

1. Sell / give away shoes that don't fit
We've all done it. We've bought a pair of heels in the sales which we later found were so painful we couldn't bear to wear them. Or we've thought we could get away with a size seven when we really needed a six and a half. It's time to say goodbye to these shoes and make room for new ones. If they really can't be salvaged with insoles or heel guards (be honest), give them to someone who can enjoy them or sell them on eBay and use the funds to buy a pair that truly fit.

If The Shoe Fits : Trainers - they really are just for the gym, you know...

foreveramber%20shoewawa.jpgAmber McNaught writes...

I realise I'm probably going to offend one or two of you at least by saying this, but I hate trainers. I know, I know: I edit Shoewawa, I live, eat and breathe shoes (note: not literally) and I should be open to all forms of footwear, right?

Well, yes, that's true. But I just can't help it. While I love heels, flats, platforms, peep toes, boots, and just about every other kind of shoe you could name, I just can't bring myself to feel the trainer love. Oh, I buy them - when I absolutely have to - but buying a new pair of trainers doesn't give me the same kind of thrill I get from bringing home a fabulous pair of heels, or some cute flats. In fact, it doesn't give me any kind of thrill at all.

Driving shoes: do you wear them? Would you buy them?

driving-shoes.jpg

No, it's not quite time for Ugly Shoe of the Week: these are driving shoes, so they're not really supposed to be pretty. (Although you could argue that's no excuse). I found them over on the French Sole website, which makes the somewhat surprising claim that "Driving shoes have become a fashion necessity for those who wish to drive and arrive in style and comfort."

Is that so, I wonder? Personally, I've never owned a pair of driving shoes, purely because I've never really seen the need. I can drive perfectly well in most of the non-specialist shoes I own, with the only exceptions being things like flip flops and slides, which I'd think twice about getting behind the wheel in.

If the shoe fits - in search of half sizes

shoewawa%20column.jpgShoewawa editor Amber McNaught's new weekly column on - what else? Shoes!

Something strange has been happening to my feet lately. (It's OK, it's nothing disgusting - you can continue with your dinner, if you're eating it). For most of my life, you see, I've been a UK size 4 in shoes. Actually, that's not quite true: when I was in high school I used to wear a 5. I'm pretty sure my feet haven't shrunk, so I'm just going to blame that on the shoes themselves.

So, I've always been a size 4, and I'm a pretty much standard size four. I can walk into a shoe store and buy shoes without trying them on. I can order over the Internet with no qualms at all - if they're a size 4, they'll fit. Until recently. Because recently, I started wearing flats. And in flats? I'm no longer a size 4. In fact, I don't know what size I am, but I'm sure it's one that hasn't been invented yet. How did this happen, I wonder? And how on earth am I meant to find shoes that fit?

Celebrity Shoes - the celebrity shoe lines we'd really like to see

dita-louboutins.jpgMove over Paris Hilton! While we're sure your new shoe line will be fab, here are some celebrities we'd really like to see designing shoes...

1. Dita Von Teese

Never knowingly under-dressed, Dita tends to keep it classic with pair after pair of gorgeous Louboutins, like the ones she's wearing in this picture. This just tells us that the woman has taste, though, so I for one would love to see what she'd come up with if she was let loose in the shoe design studio. I'm guessing high heels would be the order of the day, perhaps with a shade of the forties style glamour Dita's so well known for. I'm drooling already.

Skins Footwear - fantastic idea or soon-to-pass fad?

skins.bmp
Shoe technology is changing, changing, changing, and this is exemplified particularly by the concept behind Skins footwear. It's based around the shoe having two parts - the main structure of the shoe and the skin. This is meant to give people like you and me more choice, because we'll be able to mix and match the shoes, as well as working out as being cheaper in the long run. Click on the link to read more!

Which pair of shoes are you lusting over at the moment?

shoes.bmp
At any given time, there's always at least one pair of shoes that I'm after. Often I spend my time saving and planning what I'd wear them with, and then when I've actually saved the money I need, I invariably see a pair of shoes that are more expensive and buy those instead (to me it's logical and I can tell myself it's a bargain). I then don't want to take the new pair back but lust after the ones I never owned, until I see a new pair and the cycle continues...
