Michelle Obama wears Crocs; Tim Gunn doesn't approve

michelleobama_crocsmalindi.jpg

As fashionable as she may be, even Michelle Obama has her off-duty days. The First Lady was recently spotted out and about with hubby and kids in a pair of teal 'Malindi' slingback Crocs. Maybe this is what helped the struggling company get a much-needed injection of $30million? Either way, Tim Gunn wasn't too impressed...

Sex and the City: Shoes on the go

Every girl's handbag needs a few essential items. You've got your obvious choices, your phone, purse and lipgloss, and then you've got those other things you need 'just in case'. Umbrella's, hairslides and my trusty Redfoot Revolution shoes all fall into the latter category.

For those not familar with the brand, RR produce fold up shoes that you can put into your handbag for work commutes, round the office, and that long walk home after a night on the dance floor. I've got a few pairs in various handbags, and I've bought them for friends for Christmas and birthdays as everyone tends to ask where they can get some.

So I was pretty excited to hear they'd bought out a new range....and even more excited to hear that it's Sex and the City themed, and comes in this gorgeous mini shoe box (right)

Kat Maconie breathes new life into the ballet pump

kat-maconie.jpgOnce the humblest of all shoes, the ballet pump has become the most challenging canvas for designers, who are going all out to make flatties exciting to wear.

London designer Kat Maconie is at the forefront of this low-heeled revolution, and we're loving her style at the moment. Taking fashion forward motifs such as nautical knots, Egyptian-style snakes, studs and references to Chanel, her current range is seriously hot to trot. It's available in a few achingly cool boutiques around the UK, as well as in Peter Jones and Harvey Nichs. Prices start at around £80

Full range at Kat Maconie

Zip Corsage detail ballet flats at Oasis

oasis-ballet-flats.jpgThere are zips on everything at the moment. Zips on bags, zips on leggings, zips on...zips.

The zip detailing looks particularly chic on these ballet flats from Oasis, transforming them from the plainest of styles to something that would give a harder edge to your entire outfit. Available in red or black, they're simple and stylish. £40 at Oasis

PS if you'd like to make your own zip corsage for next to nothing, you can find out how with our sister site, Crafty Crafty.

Bargain Tuesday Miss Selfridge flats for £7

cheap-shoes.jpgThese silver, cut-out flatties from Miss Selfridge share quite a few things in common with Stella McCartney's Modern Galactic ballet flats, but are a fraction of the price at ust £7.

Their metallic sheen makes them a perfect buy for autumn and winter, and being flat as a pancake they're the all-purpose shoe you can wear anywhere and with anything. I rather like the almost 'lacy' perforated edging on the shoe, and think they'd look extremely pretty worn with long socks if you've got the confidence to carry off the look! If you want a pair for £7 you'll need to hurry: there are just a few pairs left in the Miss Selfridge sale.

Black ruffle ballet flats by Anusha

handmade-flat-shoes.jpgDon't these just look like the perfect shoes for elegant slumming around the house?

Available in silver, black, purple or teal the ultra-feminine flats are from a little-known online store called Anusha where I've been finding lots of lovely things recently. They make a change from the endless banana flats on the market at the moment (which I know that many people find rather uncomfortable) and would look great either with jeans or a more formal outfit.

£45 at Anusha

Bargain Tuesday: John Rocha ballet pumps

john-rocha2.jpgLove flatties? If your reaction to the launch of NewbarK's £295 ballet flats was one of abject horror, you'll probably be far more impressed by these stylishly comfortable pumps by John Rocha, whose affordable fashion line at Debenhams has been coming out with some great bargains lately.

His chunky suede bow pumps, available in black, purple and cream are a hugely wearable style you can dress up and down to your heart's content while the cream bow bar variety would be the perfect finish to a tailored look. Both are £22 at Debenhams
