Suede platform Mary Jane pumps by Sergio Rossi

bright-blue-mary-janes.jpgThe shape of this shoe has lots going for it, but I have to admit, it's the fabulous bright blue colour that really catches the eye. The high platform sole, and round buckle fastening also appeal - in fact, the only thing that doesn't is the $595 price tag! They're by Sergio Rossi and the uppers are a soft suede: the platform, meanwhile, is one inch high, while the heel is 4.5", so they'll give you a real height boost, too.

Mary Jane Monday: Leopard print Mary Janes by Pedro Garcia

leopard-print-mary-janes.jpgHow to give a little bit of life to your Mary Janes? Make them in leopard print, of course! That's exactly what Pedro Garcia has done with these shoes , changing them from a sensible day shoe to something that will spice up any outfit you want to wear them with. I love leopard print shoes, so I'm equally enamoured with these ones, but if you're not so keen on the print, they're also available in black patent. They're £220 at My-Wardrobe.com.

Forever 21 hard top studded platform

forever21studdedplatforms.jpg

Studded, 'tough'-looking shoes and accessories are the hot thing at the moment. Celebs and everyday fashionistas alike are loving the contrast created by pairing a fierce accessory with a prim and proper pencil skirt or floaty floral dress. SJP with her studded belt in the Sex and the City movie is just one case in point.

Christian Louboutin's Ariella boots and Mad Mary platforms have been seen on about every fashionable foot from here to Timbuktu. So of course, Forever 21 are not far behind. These hard top studded platforms will give you a similar look for only $22.80.

Mary Jane Monday: Strutt's black and gold platform Mary Janes

strutt-mjs.jpg£115 may not seem like much of a "bargain" for a pair of shoes, but given that these ones by Strutt have been reduced from £229, you may just think they're worth it. With a YSL-style toe and black and gold vamp, there's something classic about this shoe, although the silver and white version which is also available is a completely different story, and looks far cheaper than these ones! The shiny gold of the platform and heel on these shoes won't be to everyone's taste, of course, but if you like them, you can find them at ASOS.com, where they're still available in most sizes.

Create a buzz in Pleaser Dolly 66 'bee' shoes

bee shoes.jpgIt's all about insects in footwear at the moment: first, we had a plague of ladybirds, and now what's this -- a swarm of bees?

Admittedly, these oversized platform heels by fetish scene favourite Pleaser won't be to everyone's taste, but I like footwear that takes a tried and tested 'look' and injects a bit of fun. I can see these shoes making a striking addition to an '80s-style party outfit or outrageous clubbing ensemble for those who dare to be different. £34

Mary Jane Monday: Linea Paolo's floral print 'Zara' Mary Jane pumps

linea-paolo-mary-janes.jpgNot even the humble Mary Jane is immune to the tide of floral print that's been hitting our stores this summer, as these 'Zara' pumps by Linea Paolo prove. They have black patent piping surrounding a print that's bright and bold, but not so much so that you'll find it difficult to wear. These will add a nice touch to sundresses, pencil skirts and trousers - just be wary of trying to wear them with anything else floral! If you don't like this particular colour combination, they're also available in brown with yellow flowers, and you can find them at Nordstrom, where a pair will set you back $99.95.

Christian Dior's 'Cabaret' Mary Janes

NMX0802_mn.jpgI can see why Christian Dior decided to name these black suede and leather Mary Janes 'Cabaret'. They have the look of the kind of shoes you'd see on stage somewhere, with the shaped heel, cutaway section and leather straps helping to give them a bit of a theatrical look. With that said, these shoes aren't so over-the-top that you wouldn't be able to wear them in "real" life: quite the opposite, in fact, because this is a shoe which could take you almost anywhere. Sure, they're much more eye-catching and unusual than regular Mary Janes, but sometimes that has to be a good thing!
