Tartan: it's going to be absolutely inescapable this winter (just in case you hadn't already guessed), and this is a fact that fills me with dismay because, well, I hate it. It's all over the place like a tartan rash right now, though, and one way to wear it is on the legs, in the form of tights. Already quite a few retailers are stocking these: the ones on the left of the picture above are by Jonathan Aston, and are £7.50 at My-Wardrobe, while the ones on the right are from River Island, and are £7.99.
The thing that bothers me most about these, tartan aside, is the way the pattern doesn't match at the seams, but I'm guessing that, as they've both done this, it's probably pretty difficult to wrap tartan around a leg and have it match perfectly, so I guess we'll have to let them off.

I don't know how much you normally spend on hosiery, but my habit of laddering even the thickest denier within minutes would definitely put me off paying £60 for a pair of tights. That's how much you'll pay for these floral patterned ones by Chloe, and although I haven't seen these in person, and so can't vouch for the quality, I'd venture to suggest that a large part of that cost comes from the Chloe name alone.
I like the pattern, and despite mourning the end of summer, am secretly looking forward trying out some of the new breed of patterned tights we've been seeing come into the stores recently, but I think I'm going to have to wait for a high street copy to become available first. If you can't wait that long, you can get these ones at Net-a-Porter.

I know there are lots of you out there who just can't wait to give up the pretence at summer clothes, and get back into your cosy, opaque tights, and the good news is that patterned/coloured tights are going to be just as much in evidence this winter as they were last year.
Stripes were big all summer thanks to the nautical trend, but these River Island tights will let you take the look into winter, too. They're £5.99, will help inject a bit of fun into your winter wardrobe, and can be purchased here.

Mini socks could soon be a fashionable item if ASOS.com are stocking them. Created by French designer Delphine Murat, they were popularized in a 2006 edition of British Vogue. Since then, we haven't heard much from the brand that combines the practicality of sockettes with stylish ballet-style straps which you wrap ribbon-like around the ankle. I'm loving these lace ballerina Mini Socks with their floral design and how they would just jazz up a pair of simple black pumps. They will set you back £25 from ASOS.

I thought these were boots when I first saw them on the ASOS website, but nope, these are socks, folks, which begs the question: what do you think of them? I guess the fact that they do look so much like boots - albeit very skintight ones - could make them appeal to those of us who never can find knee-high boots to fit our legs, properly, but, not being a bit fan of exposed zips, I don't think these are quite my style.
If they're very much your style, however, you can find them for £16 at ASOS, who are currently carrying quite a wide range of unusual socks and tights in preparation for winter.

When was the last time you wore striped knee high socks? Unless you like to experiment with fashion, I'll assume it was when you still let your mother dress you. So when I saw these socks I sort of flashbacked to my childhood and I started to wonder if I would wear them now with shorts of a mini dress. And the answer is 'probably not'. The blue and black stripes are rather bold and it's just not my style. Though they would come in handy on a cold winter's night and these striped knee high socks from ASOS will just set you back £4. Bargain!
Semi sheer black tights are all the rage right now, but if you don't want just regular black tights just imagine wearing these lace hold up tights by Leg Avenue under a rather proper dress. No one but you will know just how saucy and sexy your tights really are with the pink lace trim detail. Though the black seam at the back may give it away... but the true sauciness of them would be left up to people's imagination. Then when you go visit that special someone he might get a nice surprise...
