This seasons must-have tights: the high street edition

tights.jpgWhether it's a love of fashion that's driving your or just a strategy for basic survival in the cold, tights are in this season. There are some wonderful tights out there, many of which we've featured on this blog. But haven't the prices got a bit out-of-control recently?

The likes of Bebaroque et. al. are charging way more than any sane person would pay for a garment with the tendency to ladder - however careful you are with your nails, you can never quite predict what will happen when your tights come into contact with velcro, jewellery, car doors or the dreaded cigarettes.

So, I've been on a hunt for exciting and attractive high street equivalents. Everything in this selection is £10 or less.

Read on over the jump for details in each case...

Showstopping hosiery by Wolford for s/s 2010

wolford-1.jpgWolford is the original luxury tights company and is showing a real commitment to emerging trends and style with an exciting new collection for spring/summer 2010. Launched to the press last week, the new range features some daring variations on the trompe l'oeil styles that have dominated this season, while 80s-inspired black lace remains a key trend.

Lighter-coloured versions of some of the decorative tights and leggings we've been seeing this seasons are a new addition to the range, providing a great way to wear summer's skimpy shirt dresses and long tees.

Top 5: Ugly Tights

4239.jpgI'd wear tights all year round if I could get away with it. Black tights, bare tights, tights with the sexy seem up the back...I have almost as many pairs of tights as I have pairs of shoes. Almost.

At the moment everyone seems to be wearing statement tights. The Henry Holland mock stocking tights are massively popular at the moment, and I'm counting down the days until payday when I can join the bandwagon.

Not all tights are gorgeous though. See this cat collage on the right? Celeste Stein chose this particular pattern for a pair of tights! As if that's not ugly enough, you'll actually be charged £12.67 to wear them.

Celeste Stein isn't the only designer churning out ugly tights though....

Jonathan Aston brocade tights

brocade-tights.jpg
I wonder why there are so many awe-inspiring tights out there at the moment. Is it perhaps a reaction to how plain and businesslike our clothes seem to have become this season?

Whatever the reason I'm not complaining, as patterned tights are a joy to behold, and it's nice to have the plainer clothes to wear them without fear of clashing. My favourite from this week's crop has to be Jonathan Aston's black and gold brocade tights, which would be the centrepiece to a monochrome outfit and make your legs look dazzling. They're also a fair bit cheaper than many other hosiery items I've seen with gold bits, at £15 from My-Wardrobe.

Be seen, be safe, be stylish - with reflective socks!

reflective-lace-socls.jpgWho'd have thunk it? The latest application for the sort of reflective materials usually found on workmen's vests has sprung up in the unlikliest but most inventive of places: on the edging of socks.

Elena Corchero who makes the socks is a keen cyclist and came up with the brilliant idea of stitching the reflective lace into socks (as well as the hemlines of skirt, shorts and pretty much any other garment) to give them instant, high-visibility qualities. We *really* want to order some of this stuff before bonfire night!

Trompe l'oeil tights at Topshop

08A13VBLK_large.jpg
Henry Holland kicked off the Trompe L'oeil look with this awesome (and affordable!) faux-stockings range, and here's another mind bending pair from Topshop. The string lace effect will look great worn over bright opaques and patterned tights on a night out. For a more simple tonal effect try them over a pair of flesh-coloured tights or some grey opaques.

The tights are a bit OTT for daywear, so team with something a little subdued to tone them down slightly. A grey slouchy sweater dress and boots will look great if you're feeling a little timid but still allow for a glimpse of lacing. [Via Catwalk Queen]

Jonathan Aston metallic polka-dot tights

jonathon aston tights.jpg

We've done polka dot already, and now here is a glitzier version. These semi sheer black tights are filled with metallic polka dots, which is a subtle way to add some shimmer to your look. They're by Jonathan Aston and retail at £15 from My Wardrobe.

You could wear them with a pencil skirt, the metallic dots contrasting well with the classic styling of the skirt. The sparkle quickly gives some oomph to an evening outfit. You can easily bundle them into your bag and whip them out on a Friday night for an instant transformation, Superman style! [Via Catwalk Queen]
