At this time of year, even the trainers are shiny... Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I'm going to go with "good thing", because anything that makes a pair of trainers more interesting is a positive move in my book, but these may well be just a little bit too shiny for some of you. If they're not, and you like them enough to actually wear them, they're just £20 from Viva la Diva.

Metallic trainers - the easy way to dress up a casual, comfortable look! I love them, and I particularly like the slimline look of these ones from Barratts, which have a cracked-effect upper which will look good poking out of the bottom of jeans. Comfort and a bit of glamour - all for £25 at Barratts.

Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester (a.k.a. Blair Waldorf) has joined the campaign for Reebok. I know. It's not quite what I expected either, but nonetheless Reebok have been known to embrace the pulling-power of a few it-girls, Agyness Deyn and Scarlett Johansson for example. Leighton was spotted shooting the campaign on the streets of New York earlier this week (pictured above) much to the dismay of GG lovers who argue that no one on the hit teen show even wears trainers. They have a point. [via Fashionista]

Puma has a fantastic new range of shoes and sportswear based on the iconic work of Roy Lichtenstein. I particularly like these trainers, which are also available in red and grey, as they are at once delightfully simple and immediately reminiscent of the pop art guru's style; this simplicity contrasts starkly with Nike's far less subtle attempt at capturing the style. In fact, I like these so much that they might even come between me and the Onitsuka Tigers I've had my eye on for months... £40 at ASOS

As I mentioned back in August, New Balance and Nine West have teamed up to collaborate on a range of casual footwear.
Here is a preview of that colourful collection, described as 'energetic, fun, a bit mischevious and spontaneous'. Combining elements of the classic 410 trainer, the range includes fabrics such as t-shirt jersey and is represented by an anime character known as 'Nwibi' - click here to find out more.

When it comes to trainers, I always find slightly retro styles a little easier to wear because they tend to be that bit sleeker and narrower than many of the chunky, rugged styles around now. These Mystere Chevron trainers by Puma get my vote, then, not just because of their retro looks, but because of the gold uppers which help glam them up a little and make them a good choice for those casual Fridays where you want to dress comfortably but don't quite know where the day will take you. They're $75 from Piperlime.
